Japanese Game Companies
Japan has some of the biggest companies in the video game industry. Nintendo is the most notable of the bunch. They were originally a playing cards company. In 1977, Nintendo started producing video game consoles. This turned out to be a fantastic move for the company. The release of the NES game console and Super Mario Bros. in 1985 took them to number one. Did you know that Mario was loosely based on the Italian owner of the Nintendo America property? The other Japanese game company I will mention is Sony. Sony is the creator of PlayStation. PlayStation was the first video game console to ship 100 million units. PlayStation was actually a joint project between Nintendo and Sony. When Nintendo pulled out because of gaming rights Sony decided to produce the console own their own. Sony was able to overtake Nintendo with the number one selling console. The Wii and DS entertainment systems have since reclaimed Nintendo's dominance in this market.
